The Italian government is insisting that Rocco Buttiglione remains its candidate for the job of EU justice commissioner despite MEPs effectively vetoing him.

The Italian government is insisting that Rocco Buttiglione remains its candidate for the job of EU justice commissioner despite MEPs effectively vetoing him.

EU leaders are expected to hold informal talks on Friday to discuss the continuing difficulties over the appointment of the new EU Commission.

The EU is in an unprecedented situation after incoming EC President Jose Manuel Barroso withdrew his proposed team because the EU Parliament was threatening to reject it.
