Absenteeism costing business €1.5bn a year

Employers’ lobby group IBEC has said absenteeism is costing Irish business around €1.5 billion a year.

The group said that around 14 million working days are lost each year, which averages almost eight days per worker.

A survey of 557 firms found that 40% of short-term absence occurs at weekends and that the problem was worst in large companies.
