Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has urged world leaders including the US and China to follow his lead and abandon their weapons of mass destruction arsenals.

On a visit to Brussels, his first trip to Europe in 15 years, he said Libya is now an example for promoting global peace.

Libya has decided to lead the peace movement all over the world, he said, highlighting Tripoli's pledge to end its programmes of mass destruction, which has led to the ending of its international pariah status.

European Commission President Romano Prodi hailed Libya's decision to break with its violent past. Mr Prodi said the EU was committed to integrating Tripoli into its Euro-Mediterranean dialogue.
