Road accidents claim challenged

Safety experts have challenged a claim by a Progressive Democrat senator that road accidents do not tend to occur in 30 and 40 mile an hour zones.

Senator Tom Morrissey made the claim on RTÉ Radio this morning while criticising the policing of traffic in built up areas.

But the National Safety Council has issued figures showing that almost a third of all road fatalities occur in such areas.

They also say the penalty points system has reduced pedestrian deaths by 24%.
