The Spanish Socialist leader, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, has vowed to wage a relentless war on terrorism as the country’s Prime Minister.

Mr Zapatero was setting out his plans for the next four years in a speech in parliament to mark his investiture.

Mr Zapatero's PSOE party won in Spain’s national elections which were held three days after the 11 March Madrid train bombings that killed 192 people.

Today, Mr Zapatero reiterated that Spanish troops could remain in Iraq only under a mandate from the United Nations.

Before taking power, Mr Zapatero must win the support of parliament. However, he is expected to win the necessary majority in the first round of voting.
