Former Archbishop defends speech

The former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, has defended a speech in which he described Islamic political culture as authoritarian and resistant to modern life.

He said he was astonished by the reaction of British Muslims who accused him of recycling religious prejudice.

Speaking after the lecture in Rome, he said he had been equally critical of a moral decline and lack of values in the Christian world.

But he added that Muslim leaders should condemn the evils of suicide bombings.
