The British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has said that the UK is still not ready to join the European single currency in the short or medium term.

Mr Blair said the economic tests for British membership of the euro had still not been met.

It is now considered extremely unlikely that Britain will hold a referendum on the issue before the general election expected there next year.
