Woman dies in Italian rail crash

Two trains collided early today in northern Italy, killing a French woman and injuring 23 other passengers.

Both trains were trans-European sleepers, one travelling from Rome to Paris and the other heading in the opposite direction.

A spokesman for the state railway said the back carriage on the Paris-bound train jumped the tracks near the station of Stresa-Belgirate in the path of the Rome-bound train.

The ensuing collision, at around 4.10am, derailed the locomotive and three further carriages.

Italian news agency Ansa said the dead woman was 82-years-old.

The railway spokesman said it was not yet clear why the back carriage had derailed.
