Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has strongly rejected comments by the Taoiseach that he had always assumed Mr Adams had been a member of the IRA.

Mr Adams said the Taoiseach's assumption was wrong and that he was not a member of the IRA.

Speaking to RTÉ News earlier today, Mr Ahern also said he did not know Mr Adam's present position in relation to the IRA and said he was not concerned about it.

The Taoiseach said he did not know the make up of the IRA army council, but he said it was a question that was worth finding the answer to.
