BA flight 223 continued delay

The British Airways flight at the centre of security concerns over the past few days has been delayed again.

A BA spokeswoman said flight 223, which had been due to leave Heathrow for Washington DC this afternoon, has been delayed because the US asked for extra information about it 'for security purposes'.

The same flight was cancelled on Thursday and Friday and delayed yesterday before departure, amid security concerns.

The latest set back for the flight came hours after the British Transport Minister Alistair Darling warned air passengers can expect delays caused by security alerts for years to come.

Mr Darling would not discuss what had led to the recent delays and cancellations, but said there had been good grounds for the decisions.

Speaking in BBC television, Mr Darling said that he could not give a running commentary on the intelligence behind the British government's request that BA call off a scheduled flight to Washington on Thursday and Friday, and one to Riyadh yesterday.

Saudi Arabia's interior minister has meanwhile said the kingdom did not know of any security threats which led to the suspension of the BA flight.
