Afghan leaders approve constitution

Rival power groups in Afghanistan have approved a new constitution for the country which allows for the first democratic elections in nearly 25 years.

The constitution lays out the framework for Islamic republic but gives members of other faiths freedom to worship. Men and women have been given equal rights.

Delegates to the Loya Jirga, or Grand Assembly, came to agreement after three weeks of negotiations.

There had been bitter rows over the amount of power to be given to the president who is to be directly elected by the people.
