Swiss police have said that the number of people missing from yesterday's accident in an Alpine tunnel has risen to 128. Eleven people are known to have died in the St Gotthard Tunnel following the blaze which broke out after two trucks collided head on.
The chief of police in the canton of Ticino, however, said that it was not certain that all those missing were in the tunnel. Firefighters have been prevented from entering the scene because of the intense heat. Parts of the tunnel's roof have collapsed.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has said that there have so far been no reports of Irish injuries or casualties.
