Authorities in the United States say 10 people have been killed and more than 45 injured after a series of tornadoes struck the southern state of Alabama. The authorities in Tuscaloosa County, one of the worst affected areas, say at least six people were killed when their mobile homes were crushed by the storms.
Local police say hundreds of people have been left homeless and thousands of households are without electricity. Several airlines have also cancelled flights. Rescue workers were due to today begin damage assessment following the disaster, Alabama's worst tornado in 70 years. November and December are considered Alabama's secondary tornado season, with twisters still occurring, although less frequently than in summer or early autumn.
