The SDLP leader, John Hume, may be kept in hospital in Austria overnight, after undergoing an emergency operation for a ruptured intestine. Party colleagues have been quoted as saying that Mr Hume had been unwell for weeks. Mr Hume, who is 62, had been attending a conference in the western Austrian village of Alpbach when he became ill. A doctor at the hospital in nearby Kufstein, where he is being treated, said Mr Hume was doing well in an intensive care unit.
