Business: Jacob's profits trebled in 1998

Pre-tax profits at biscuit maker Jacob's, which is part of Group Danone, more than trebled to £2.1m in 1998, while sales rose by 5% to £92.8m. The company attributed the improvement to strong sales and the benefits of an

ongoing rationalisation programme at the Jacob's plant in Tallaght. Sales in the home market were up 4%, recovering market share lost in the last two years. Sales in export markets grew by 16%. Neil Murphy is to replace the retiring Bill McConnell as managing director of Jacob's.
