Village celebrates centenarian's birthday with cavalcade

Rathdowney in Co Laois came to a standstill this afternoon for a cavalcade to mark the 100th birthday of a local woman who has returned home from hospital to celebrate the occasion with her family.

Hannah Finane has seven children, 23 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren and has recovered after hurting her hip in a fall six weeks ago.

This afternoon her neighbours and friends came out in a group of 40 vehicles to celebrate.

Hannah watched the cavalcade from the door of her home with her son, Billy, who lives with her, while the town fire brigade and dozens of relatives and friends passed.

Earlier, she received a visit from Bishop of Ossory Dermot Farrell, and she was presented with a gift received from Pope Francis during a visit to Ireland.
