An Bord Pleanála has given the go ahead for harvesting of peat bogs in Co Offaly.

Workers at Bord na Móna had feared further job losses at a briquette factory and power station if the ruling went against them.

In a statement, the company said it is examining the decision.

Bord na Móna said that the scale of the collapse in energy demand caused by the Covid-19 emergency means that recent jobs cuts are unlikely to be reversed.

The company had been prevented from harvesting peat this season following a High Court ruling last September, which it struck down the peat regulations enacted in January 2019.

The decision by An Bord Pleanála relates to the harvesting of peat on bogs over 30 hectares and "helps sustain peat supply to Derrinlough Briquette Factory, the Horticulture business and meet the reduced peat requirement for Edenderry power station".
