Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy had said he is involved in talks with the European Investment Bank to support a programme to build more affordable houses in Ireland as the problems facing the homeless continue.

Speaking in Portlaoise at the opening of the new local authority estate, Mr Murphy said he wanted over 1,000 people on the Co Laois housing list to be aware that everything was being done to try to build new homes.

Laois County Council said it interviewed and shortlisted 1,000 families before providing homes for just 33 in the new Conniberry Way development in the centre of Portlaoise.

Mr Murphy was told the local authority owns no land in the town at the moment but badly needs more housing developments to meet the demand in the county.
