Donegal continues to have some of the highest incidence rates of Covid-19 in the country, more than two months after it first entered a period of localised restrictions due to the prevalence of the virus.

Other border areas, particularly Dundalk in Co Louth, are also seeing higher incidence of the coronavirus compared to the national average.

The figures, recorded as of midnight on 30 November, show a slowing of the spread of the virus, with 14-day incidence rates falling nationwide to an average of 87 cases per 100,000.

The national picture now shows Ireland as having one of the lowest rates of the virus in Europe.

The latest National Public Health Emergency Team briefing heard that the infection rate is "static" and no further improvements are expected in coming weeks.

Of the ten areas with the highest coronavirus rates, five are in Donegal, with the rest spread across Mayo, Cork and Kilkenny.

In Donegal, the Letterkenny local electoral area has the highest rate in the country, with 288.7 cases per 100,000.

The incidence rate in the Carndonagh area is 271.2, while in Buncrana it is 250.4.

Donegal's Milford area is seeing a 14-day rate of 254.2, and the Lifford-Stranorlar local electoral area currently has an incidence rate of 224 cases per 100,000.

In Louth, Dundalk and the northern areas of the county are particularly badly hit.

The Dundalk-Carlingford local electoral area has a 14-day incidence of 257.8 per 100,000.

The Dundalk South area has a rate of 194.2. The Drogheda-rural local electoral area has the next highest rate in the county, with 167.8 cases per 100,000.

The Cork City South Central local electoral area is now Cork's worst affected area, with 243.1 cases per 100,000. Cork City South West also has a high rate, at 187.

One area in Mayo - Claremorris - has a much higher incidence than any other part of that county. The rate there is 232.1 per 100,000.

Kilkenny's Piltown area has a 14-day incidence of 215.5, while the Callan-Thomastown area has a 14-day incidence of 201.1.

In Limerick, the rural Adare-Rathkeale area in the west of the county has a 14-day rate of 198.5, higher than any of the city wards.

However, Limerick City North is also showing high rates, with an incidence there of 170 cases per 100,000.

The Longford LEA is also experiencing high rates of Covid-19, with 174.5 cases per 100,000.

The highest 14-day incidence rate in Dublin is in the Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart area, with 167.1 cases per 100,000.

Several urban areas have rates of Covid-19 that are far below the national average. The Cork City North West area has a Covid-19 rate of just 12.4, while Nenagh in Co Tipperary is at 28.1.

Ennis in Co Clare has an incidence of 32.4 per 100,000. Wexford has a low incidence of the virus, with the port town of Rosslare recording a rate of 23.2. Killarney in Co Kerry has a Covid rate of 23.6.
