Over 100 staff at Roscommon County Council are staging a second one-day strike today in a dispute over flexi-leave.

The first strike took place last Thursday, with further disruption set for every Tuesday and Thursday.

The staff’s union, Fórsa, said that the council’s failure to allow workers take additional time off is anti-family and in breach of binding Labour Court recommendations issued last year.

The Labour Court ruled that Roscommon council staff should have the same rights as their colleagues through the local government sector, but Fórsa said no worker had been approved for flexi-leave in the past year.

Yesterday, Roscommon County Council said it was prepared to engage again within the industrial relations channels if the strike was called off, but the unions say they will continue their action until council management agrees to reintroduce flexi-leave arrangements similar to those in place in other local authorities.

Last Saturday, 300 Fórsa members and supporters marched through Roscommon to support the workers in a protest that drew support from other trade unions including Siptu, Connect, Mandate and Northern Irish unions Unison and Nipsa.
