A pillar is unveiled in Renmore and a parade held in Galway to mark the events of Easter Week 1916.
The Golden Jubilee commemorations in Galway began with the unveiling of a granite pillar in the grounds of Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa in Renmore. At the ceremony the pillar was blessed by Reverend T Kelly and unveiled by Colonel P O Ceirin. The Proclamation was read in Irish by Captain J Young. A colour party paraded and a perpetual flame was lit at the foot of the pillar by Lieutenant J Lally. Among those attending were the Mayor Brendan Holland, the former Minister for Defence, G Bartley, Senator Martin Killilea, and the town clerk Mr P J Waters.
Later a large crowd turned out in Eyre Square, Galway where members of the Old IRA formed a guard of honour. At the Liam Mellows Memorial actor Siobhan McKenna read the Proclamation and Pearse's poem 'The Wayfarer'.
