In January last year, Pat McManus, who held the post of supervising teacher in Arbour Hill Prison, criticised the conditions there which had led several prisoners in the new segregation unit to attempt suicide. Subsequently he was withdrawn from the prison following complaints to the Vocational Education Committee (VEC).
