Gardaí fire shots in the air during a confrontation in Emyvale, County Monaghan, after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) fired a volley over the coffin of Loughgall ambush victim James Lynagh.

As the body of James Lynagh, a former Sinn Féin councillor in Monaghan is carried through the border village of Emyvale, County Monaghan from Craigavon Hospital, County Armagh. Three men in paramilitary dress and carrying rifles step forward and fire a volley of shots over the coffin.

As the firing party disappeared into the crowd, a small number of Gardaí run down a side street in an apparent attempt to trace members of the firing party.

The crowd overturn a Garda car, an armed detective fires a machine gun into the air. Another detective fires a pistol. A detective trapped in the overturned car is rescued by Gardaí.
