The main shopping area in Cork city St Patrick's Street is open for business after improvement works.

A carnival atmosphere was created in Cork for the reopening of the city centre's main shopping area Saint Patrick's Street. Cork City Council and local business decided that redevelopment of the street was needed to bring shoppers into the city centre as trade was being lost to suburban shopping centres.

The new design created by Spanish architect Beth Gali aims to make the street more pedestrian friendly with new paving and lighting. Reaction from local people to the new look Patrick Street is mixed.

One woman says of the new lighting,

They remind you of a maritime scene I think they are nice

Anotrher lady is not so sure,

You have to put up with it. But we don't like them.

This reopening of St Patrick's Street is just the start of a redevelopment of Cork city centre.
