A new accident prevention campaign with an emphasis on protecting people who cycle and walk.
Minister for Local Government Neil Blaney launches the Summer Safety Week road safety campaign in conjunction with the Safety First Association of Ireland. This campaign will draw public attention to the road safety of cyclists and pedestrians. While previous campaigns have concentrated on drivers of cars,
It is also a fact that cyclists and pedestrians seem to be the people that are most prone to injury.
The campaign focuses on the behaviour of cyclists and the roadworthiness of their bicycles. Summer Safety Week includes a bicycle inspection scheme in schools that looks at brakes, tyres, bells, reflectors, wheels, lights, handlebars, chains, pedals, cranks and mudguards.
The inspector reports on the bicycle's condition, noting whether it is roadworthy or on its level of roadworthiness.
