Residents in north Dublin to appeal the decision granting planning permission for a new runway at Dublin Airport.

Dublin Airport has three runways, the main one was built in 1989. Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) says a new runway is needed to expand capacity at the airport. The runway is seen as vital to the DAA's 1.2 billion euro ten-year development plan for the airport.

Fingal County Council has granted planning permission for a new runway at Dublin Airport, which will run parallel to the existing main runway. This new northern parallel runway will be about 500 metres longer.

The council has received more than 800 objections to the DAA's plan from residents in north County Dublin. United Portmarnock Residents Opposing Another Runway (UPROAR) is totally opposed to the proposal by the DAA to build a new northern parallel runway. As the flightpath will be directly over Portmarnock, UPROAR member Angela Lawton has major concerns about noise pollution.

It's an environmental monster destroying a beautiful area for all of north county Dublin.

The next step, according to UPROAR member Matt Harley, is to appeal the Council's decision to give the go-ahead to the new second runway at Dublin Airport to An Bord Pleanála.

DAA intend to take the residents' concerns into account when operating the runway. The DAA want to see it built by 2012.
