A look at how the Air Corps Maritime Squadron monitor fishing activities in Irish waters.

Aonghus McAnally is at Casement Aerodrome (Baldonnel), where he meets Commandant Ralph James of the Air Corps Maritime Squadron.

This squadron patrols Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone, which contains valuable fishing grounds. The surveillance duties include monitoring illegal trawlers.

Captain John McDermott is responsible for photographing vessels fishing illegally and expects that they will see something today, as the south west is normally quite busy.

The aircraft’s radar locates a trawler fishing illegally. The vessel is photographed and activity documented, with details relayed to the Naval Service, who take the next step.
