After fifty years working at the English Market in Cork Siobhán O'Connor retires from her stall.

Since 1881 the English Market has provided the best quality meat, fish, fruit and vegetables to the people of Cork and visitors to the city.

Siobhán O'Connor from Turners Cross has spent the last half century as a purveyor of fine fruit and vegetables. Held in high esteem by her customers and colleagues she has enjoyed working at the English Market.

Also in the fruit and vegetable trade is Eileen Ahern, who will miss the daily interactions and the close connection of working with her sister.

We made our cup of tea in the morning together.

Siobhán O'Connor's retirement is marked, with presentations of bouquets from her granddaughters, a visit from Lord Mayor of Cork Joe O’Callaghan and tributes from customers and friends.

In 1980 The English Market was destroyed by fire, and Siobhán O'Connor and Eileen Ahern remember the wreckage, and the aroma of charred turkeys.

They were actually cooked.

It is the end of an era, but Siobhán O'Connor is looking forward to her retirement sayin it is time to go.
