The Irish Fishermen's Organisation want the introduction of a fifty mile fishing limit around Ireland.
As a member of the European Economic Community, Ireland can not just introduce a fifty mile fishing limit.
Brian Crummey, vice chairman of the Irish Fishermen's Organisation, says the fishing industry in Ireland is in such a poor state that a fifty mile limit cannot be introduced soon enough.
He estimates that over 50 per cent of this year's fishing fleet is in debt and while various governments have made promises, nothing has been done to improve the lot of the fishermen. He is not optimistic that the EEC will agree to extend limits for Irish trawlers and he believes the future for fishing is bleak.
Most of the fishermen are in debt.
