Taoiseach Charles Haughey opens the Council for the Status of Women Forum at the RDS.

Organised by the Council for the Status of Women, the two day forum is a follow-up event to the United Nations World Conference for Women in Copenhagen last July.

Taoiseach Charles Haughey opens the conference and is greeted by a silent protest calling for equal job opportunities for women, greater availability of contraceptives and divorce. There is also support shown for women republican prisoners in Armagh.

The Taoiseach acknowledged that women still experience discrimination in the workplace, and in areas such as maternity protection, childcare and the legal system.

In her address, chairwoman Hazel Boland stated that women must be able to participate fully in society, and that

Equality does not represent a threat to the family, men or the community.

Women from all over the country will participate in workshops and debates on issues such as violence against women, family law, childcare and divorce.
