The townland of Lowtown in County Kildare has the best kept canal lock in Ireland.

Bord Fáilte, Ireland's tourism development authority runs a scheme that is open to all lock keepers on the Barrow, Grand Canal and Shannon systems. This the second successive year that lock keeper Esther Conroy has won the top award

Lowtown Lock (Lock 19) in County Kildare is the meeting place of the Dublin Line, Shannon Line and Barrow Line of the Grand Canal.

Esther Conroy maintains that the spring water that feeds into Lowtown is one winning factor and that the lock is opened every day helping to maintain it.
