Young people clean the Lough, a wildlife reserve on the outskirts of Cork city.

The third largest wildlife sanctuary in Ireland, the Lough is a popular public recreation and fishing area that has also become a regular location for illegal dumping. The scale of the dumping has caused concern for the future of resident wildfowl.

Help arrived today in the form of youth organisations from Cork city. Members of Macra na Tuaithe, the Scouts and Girl Guides, the Order of Malta and Civil Defence participated in the 'Breakthrough’ programme, an initiative created

To show what young people can do for their environment.

Everything from scrap to plastic bags, old prams to bicycles.
