As Halloween approaches Cork City Gaol is the venue for a conference on ghosts and the supernatural.

For the tenth year, the World Ghost Convention will be at Cork City Gaol.

Guests include Helen Barrett, the White Witch of Cobh. She advises people at Halloween to chime a bell, use sea salt and white sage to remove ghosts from their homes.

The spirits will always leave a room when you chime a bell.

The story goes that Cork County Gaol has its own residents from another world, so it is a fitting setting for the convention. Elizabeth Kearns, manager at Cork City Gaol, claims to have heard a child crying for his mother in one of the cells. She also recounts witnessing the disappearance of a woman into one of the cell walls. While many are sceptical about the presence of ghosts, Elizabeth Kearns says the convention is a serious academic event featuring experts in folklore as well as witches.

Organiser, Catherine Courtney, says the convention offers people who have experienced the supernatural the chance to share their experience and hopes it will raise awareness about the supernatural world.
