Paying tribute to a hospital that is soon to be gone from Dublin city centre.
Jervis Street Hospital has served the people of Dublin for 250 years but the demands of modern medicine and healthcare require a modern facility in a new location. The Victorian dimensions and limited bed capacity at Jervis Street no longer meet the requirements of a modern hospital.
This hospital, The Charitable Infirmary, known to Dubliners as Jervis Street Hospital and more affectionately to those who work here as The Jerv, is the oldest voluntary hospital in Great Britain and Ireland.
When it opened, Jervis Street Hospital had just four beds. It now has 350 and admits over 15,000 patients each year.
For two centuries, it has witnessed the misery and sadness that is associated with illness and tragedy.
