Road Safety Council highlights a number of common defects found in cars on Irish roads.

As part of a week long focus on car safety, motorists can have their vehicles checked at no cost to identify any defects that could contribute to a road accident.

Jimmy Cope, chairman of the Road Safety Council, outlines the most common defects found in cars tested.

Tyres, steering, misaligned headlamps and brakes.

Many of the headlamps were covered in a layer of mud, which reduced their intensity by as much as a third. Low pressure tyres can also be a contributor to road accidents.
