Shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis and his wife Jackie visit Harland and Wolff in Belfast. and have lunch with Belfast shipyard workers and their wives at the new social club.
Jackie and Aristotle Onassis and his son, Alexander, were given a tour of the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. The yard is currently building two 264,000 tonne super tankers for the Greek shipping owners' fleet.
The couple are greeted by well-wishers on arrival at the Harland and Wolff Social Club. Wearing her trademark sunglasses, Jackie Onassis took time to meet many of the people who had waited out to greet them. A young girl presented Jackie Onassis with flowers. The couple joined 150 workers and their wives at the new club for a meal. Jackie Onassis was presented with a unique gold-plated key to the club. Aristotle Onassis donated £5,000 to the club. He is the largest single shareholder in Harland and Wolff, owning 25 per cent of the company. While Aristotle Onassis had visited Northern Ireland on many occasions, this was the first trip north of the border for his wife Jackie.
