Spectacular light displays from meteors streaking across the night sky.
The Sugar Loaf in County Wicklow was just one location where people gathered to watch the annual Perseid meteor shower. The shower is caused by debris left behind by the passing comet Swift-Tuttle.
David Moore, Astronomy Ireland, describes how the debris burns up as fiery streaks. Perseid watchers told RTÉ News what they saw in the night sky.
Views of the shower were also clear in other parts of the country, including Drogheda, Ballyshannon, Kilrush and Rosaveel. Across the world, in places like Wiltshire in England, Michigan in the USA, Grossmugl in Austria, Sofia in Bulgaria, and Norfolk in Massachusetts, people gathered to see the Perseid shower. The best view was possibly from space. The shower continues with less intensity for the rest of the week.
