Cork Public Museum marks its fiftieth anniversary with an exhibition of items that have not been on public view until now.
The museum first opened its doors in 1945 in Fitzgerald Park and not much has changed since that time. Many of the artefacts now due to go on public display had been put into storage due to lack of space on the museum floor. When it first opened, the curator at the time rightfully warned that the museum would not have enough space to display its collections.
The exhibition is a celebration of hidden treasures and includes items made in Irish cottages throughout the years. The exhibition also includes items from South Africa and South America.
The museum is continuing with a plan to make it a vibrant part of Cork life over the months ahead.
There are now plans for an exhibition about the Irish famine as well as exhibitions to celebrate various aspects of life in Cork.
