Who should operate the Aran Islands ferry service?
Last year a long running industrial dispute resulted in no ferry service to Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Oirr for months at a time. The island communities could not agree on how a future ferry service should operate. The availability of berthing slots for the ferry in Galway harbour complicated things further.
At present the ferry service is operated by CIÉ (Córas Iompair Éireann) and general manager John F Higgins wants to see a co-ordinated approach to the current situation.
He is not confident that a new ferry operator would solve the present problems.
