A proposal to plant trees on unused bogland in County Roscommon has run into a problem.

A group of farmers in Strokestown, County Roscommon have come up with a plan to use land that is lying waste. The farmers have formed a cooperative and want the Forestry Commission to purchase cutaway bogs in the area for tree planting.

The farmers say there are 850 acres of suitable land for afforestation near Strokestown that would provide badly needed employment. There is one major challenge, much of the land has been unused for so long that nobody seems to know who actually owns it.
