David Gillick the 400 metres European Athletics Indoor Champion welcomed home at Dublin Airport.

At the European Athletics Indoor Championship at the Palacio de Deportes stadium in Madrid, 21-year-old David Gillick from Ballinteer in Dublin overtook Spanish favourite David Canale to win the 400 metres gold medal.

He became the first Irish sprinter in 73 years to win a gold medal at a major international event. The win comes at David Gillick's first major championship and the former Gaelic footballer trains without an indoor track.

Family and friends gather at Dublin Airport to welcome the new European champion home. Among those present are athletes from the Dundrum South Dublin Athletic Club and Ballinteer St John's Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club.

David Gillick’s girlfriend Katie Doyle is proud of his achievement.

He's a superb athlete, even before this, he's trained so hard.

The strongest memory David Gillick has of the race is seeing a clear track ahead and the finishing line.

I just went for it; I wasn't going to be beaten then.

David Gillick plans to have a week off before resuming training for the 2005 outdoor season. His sights could be set on qualifying for the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
