A section of the roof of Kilkenny Castle is being restored.

Kilkenny Castle was built in the thirteenth century by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. For almost six hundred years the castle was the seat of the Butler family, who resided there until 1935.

In 1967 the Marquis of Ormond formally handed over the castle to the people of Kilkenny. It is now under the stewardship of the Board of Works.

The Picture Gallery in Kilkenny Castle dates from the early nineteenth century and was designed by William Robertson, with later alterations by Dean and Woodward architects.
