Galway Corporation completes the purchase of the Spanish Arch.

The Spanish Arch is one of the most famous landmarks in Galway and an attraction for tourists.

Dating from the 13th century, the arch has now been puchased by Galway Corporation on behalf of the city. The Spanish Arch incorporates the Athy Doorway built in 1577 and named after one of the 14 tribes of Galway.

Also included in the purchase is the adjoining Spanish Arch House which is one of the oldest inhabited homes in Galway city. Spanish Arch House was used during the 1950s to preserve stonework from old Galway buildings which were in danger of being lost through demolition.
