Helicopter used to bring supplies and help people on and off Tory Island during spell of bad weather.

Poor weather conditions and high seas in the north west of Ireland meant that the ferry to Tory Island has not been able to run for over a week.

Tory islanders who have not been able to return to their homes due to the high seas remain stranded on the mainland. King of Tory Patsy Dan Rodgers is one of those stuck on the mainland. While he is appreciative of the help he has received from people not being able to get home is a costly inconvenience.

The Sligo based coastguard helicopter has come to the rescue airlifting people and food from the mainland to the island where supplies were running low. The Tory Island Co-op made a call for help. Bread, meat, vegetables, frozen food and milk were airlifted to the island by the coastguard helicopter.

This is the second time that Tory has been cut off for over a week in recent times. James McGinley, Chairman of the Tory Island Co-Op, says that while the island has a great ferry service, you can not argue with mother nature.

One of those airlifted from the island was NUI Galway student Ciara Doohan who was eager to return to college and work.
