The English Market opens after refurbishment and the president visits a Cork social housing project.

At the Old English Market in Cork, the Lord Mayor Tim Falvey was presented with a gift of a Christmas turkey. The name "Old English Market" possibly comes from the use of the area by English settlers many years ago when the native Irish were moved outside the city walls. The market was reopened by the Lord Mayor following a £200,000 refurbishment.

It's a traditional part of Cork shopping with a wide variety of food stalls.

The refurbished market reopened just in time for Christmas shopping in Cork. The city's business association says the revived English Market provides a boost to consumer confidence and predicts that spending will be up this Christmas.

Elsewhere in Cork city, President Mary Robinson officially opened a new community housing cooperative project at Wellington Square. Three Georgian houses have been restored and converted into eight dwellings providing homes for twenty people.

It aims to provide affordable housing and conserve the city's architectural heritage.
