The famed Cork GAA club Glen Rovers is raising funds to develop new pitches and additional facilities.

Founded in 1916, Glen Rovers Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club in Blackpool, Cork is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. Fianna Fáil TD for Cork City North-West Jack Lynch played with The Glen and won six consecutive All Ireland medals.

Today that famous club, football and hurling is in the midst of a £400,000 fundraising scheme.

Glen Rovers vice-president Dr Jim Young says the club plays an important role in the local community.

We have 41 teams, I suppose it would be approximately 800 players of all ages, sizes shapes and descriptions.

Since the fund raising campaign launched in November 1979, Glen Rovers have purchased a new field. The next phase of the project is to develop two full size playing pitches. The work will begin on the site once planning is finalised. However, the work is also weather-dependent.

The sooner we can do it, the sooner we start.
