A young seal is nursed back to health at the Irish Seal Sanctuary in north Dublin.
Sally the seal is six months old and was rescued in Donegal. At present she is being cared for by Brendan Price of the Irish Seal Sanctuary, but will eventually return to where she was found.
We always try to bring them back to where they come from.
Feeding Sally, keeping the enclosure clean and moving her to a pool to swim all form part of the rehabilitation. Joanne King, Katie Rice, Graham O'Neill & Niamh Flynn from 76th Dublin Garristown Cub Scouts lend a helping hand.
The cub scouts are alos fundraising to support the work of the Irish Seal Sanctuary by designing and selling their own Christmas cards and organising events like car washes and a jumble sale.
Skerries fisherman John Attlee brings the cub scouts, Brendan Price and reporter Emer Duane out on his boat for a look at the seal colony on Skerries Island.
Many fishermen believe that an increase in seal numbers has affected the fish stocks. While John Attlee has no issue with seals, he acknowledges that their presence is affecting people’s livelihoods.
The work of Brendan Price and all the helpers at the Irish Seal Sanctuary ensure that the seals will not be forgotten.
This episode of 'Echo Island’ was broadcast on 2 December 1994. The reporter is Emer Duane.
