Congestion on the roads of the mid-west could be eased with public transport and more use of the railway.
Traffic congestion is a growing problem in Irish towns and cities. A conference on transportation hosted by the Mid-West Regional Authority in association with Limerick Corporation and Shannon Development heard that public transport must be on the agenda of policy makers.

Discussions at the conference also covered the future ownership of Shannon Airport, given its economic importance for the west coast, as well as competing against centralising influences from Dublin.
