Swimmers compete in a seven mile open sea race from Aughinish in Clare to Salthill in Galway.
The Galway Bay Open Sea Race was organised by the University College Galway (UCG) Swimming Club as part of the Galway Quincentennial celebrations. The competitors swam from Aughinish across Galway Bay to Salthill.
The race was won by 18 year old Martin Coughlin from King's Hospital Swimming Club, who completed the race in two hours and 35 minutes. The first woman to finish the race was Anne Mageen from Belfast in a time of four hours and 18 minutes. Fourteen swimmers took part in the event with four swimmers haveing to drop out as a result of cramps and the effects of the cold water.
