A new system will help licence fee collectors detect who has a television but does not have a television licence.
According to Terry Reynolds of An Post, who are responsible for collecting the television licence fee, the technology is currently available in the Dublin region and will be extended nationwide later in the year.
An Post has already computerised all licence holder information. This will be matched against other information from dealers and cable relay companies in order to identify those people who have television sets but do not have a television licence.
There are about 100,000 unpaid licences nationwide.
